Professional Stress and Work Motivation Among Croatian Preschool Educators
Abstract
The research analyzes professional stress and work motivation among educators in preschool institutions in the Republic of Croatia. A quantitative study was conducted with a sample of 130 educators from 18 Croatian counties. The aim was to examine the relationship between the frequency of stress and work motivation, as well as to determine the correlation between years of work experience and motivation. Descriptive statistical procedures, Pearson correlation analysis, t-tests, and regression analysis were employed. The results indicate an exceptionally strong negative correlation between the frequency of stress and work motivation (r = -0.939), with stress accounting for 88.1% of the variance in motivation. A linear increase in motivation was confirmed with years of work experience, ranging from the lowest among beginners (M = 1.667) to the highest among experienced educators (M = 4.893). Educators contemplating a career change exhibit significantly lower motivation (Cohen's d = -2.913). Positive relationships with colleagues significantly reduce stress (r = -0.864). The research highlights the issue of burnout syndrome and the need for a systematic approach to safeguarding the mental health of educators.
